How diaphragmatic breathing can help alleviate back pain

Updated: 4 hours ago

Diaphragmatic breathing is a simple yet powerful technique that can have a profound impact on our bodies especially when it comes to alleviating back pain.

Here’s how:

1. Creates Intra-Abdominal Pressure: Diaphragmatic breathing creates intra-abdominal pressure, which generates power and force, we transmit this force from the core to our extremities, allowing us to move functionally and effectively.

2. Optimises Core Muscle Function: By activating the diaphragm, we help the surrounding (core) muscles function properly, leading to improved posture, more support and reduced tension in the back.

3. Supporting the lumbar spine: Diaphragmatic breathing helps to stabilise the lumbar spine via the crura or ‘legs’ of the diaphragm, which attach onto L2 and L3.

4. Massages Internal Organs: The downward movement of the diaphragm during inhalation gently massages the organs within the abdomen and pelvic floor, promoting better circulation, lymph flow and overall health.

5. Engages the Pelvic Floor: The downward movement and pressure of the diaphragm cues the pelvic floor muscles, enhancing stability and support for the spine.

6. Encourages Proper Load Distribution: This method helps distribute loads evenly throughout the spine, allowing kinetic forces to flow correctly as we move, reducing the risk of injury and promoting better movement.

Incorporating diaphragmatic breathing into your daily routine can be so effective for managing back pain and can lay the groundwork for a stronger, more resilient body.
